Retreat Spotlight: Clinton Hill Community Action 2022

Clinton Hill Community Action works to revitalize the neighborhood of Clinton Hill, Newark (New Jersey) and ensure that local development is equitable, just and responsive to the needs of its residents. Programmatically, they work to advance housing and food justice and community-building.

The Uplands was thrilled to welcome back Clinton Hill Community Action for another changemaker retreat that took place in early October. Key among their objectives were to build and deepen their organizational culture, reconnect with the organization’s vision and theory of change, strengthen collaboration and set targets for 2023.

The retreat began with the leadership team focusing on the organization’s values and culture, goals and targets, which was interspersed by a wellness walk on a forested path and guided hike through a scenic meadow. Mid-week, the leadership team was joined by their fellow staffmembers.

Their substantive work throughout the week included a facilitated discussion about the organization’s mission and values, an “unconference”, and strategic goal-setting by program teams. That was accompanied by several activities led by staff at The Uplands, including several teambuilding exercises, a yoga class, a guided nature walk, building a mandala, and an art project.

We are grateful for Clinton Hill Community Action for their tireless commitment to serving their community and for the trust and openness with which they received the offerings of The Uplands.
