Environmental Spotlight: Wild Plants Walk

Environmental Spotlight: Wild Plants Walk

The Uplands was thrilled to host Laura Silverman from The Outside Institute for a Wild Plants Walk. This free community event was open to anyone interested in learning more about the enchanting world of plants. The group learned about the ecology, natural histories, medicinal properties, and nutritive value of plants along The Uplands’ Brook Trail.

A wild ramp seed head – smells like onion!

The group delved into the healing properties of Plantain, the anxiety-relief that Blue Vervain offers, the tasty treats hidden under Mayapple leaves, the immunity-boosting Elderberry, and the heart medicine of Hawthorne, and much more. Everyone was surprised to hear that Barberry, a bush that is notorious for housing ticks, offers a lyme treatment via the berberine found in its roots. The group was also tickled to learn that Burdock burrs were the inspiration for the invention of Velcro.
