Retreat Spotlight: Global Initiative for Economic, Social and Cultural Rights

From November 20-24 The Uplands hosted the staff of the Global Initiative for Economic, Social and Cultural Rights (GI-ESCR), who traveled from overseas for a changemaker retreat, together with a member of their Board. GI-ESCR uses human rights law to advance social and economic justice. They have programs addressing public services, climate change, public finance and tax reform, education, health and gender equity, among others.

During their stay at The Uplands, the group engaged in team building in the context of leadership transitions. They advanced strategic planning for the coming year’s programs addressing health, financing for climate adaptation, reform of tax and financial  architecture, education, public services and care work and corporate capture, relating to private sector accountability. They also planned their ongoing work with the human rights systems at the United Nations, the Interamerican system (of the Organization of American States) and the African Union’s African Commission for Peoples and Human Rights. In-between work sessions, they enjoyed hearty stews, flavorful chicken dishes, fresh salads and a range of pastries.

The group took part in several Uplands-guided activities, including teambuilding and facilitated collective discussion. They enjoyed a sound bath, a yoga class, a wellness walk. An unexpected snowfall created an impromptu opportunity for play, and a special treat for those who live in warmer climates. We were delighted to have GI-ESCR at The Uplands and look forward to welcoming them, and fellow members of the human rights community, in future occasions.
