Retreat Spotlight: Common Defense

Retreat Spotlight: Common Defense

The Uplands was thrilled to host the leadership of Common Defense, a grassroots veterans’ organization representing over 400,000 members and veterans across the US. The organization works to build the leadership of its members via campaigns that connect directly to their history of service, including voting rights, climate justice, and anti-militarism.

From December 1-5, 20 members of their leadership team and Board took the time to regroup, plan and articulate a vision for their work in the current political moment.

The retreat covered topics as diverse as conflict management, shifting organizational culture, building power and partnerships with other veteran’s organizations. Their program was interspersed with sumptuous meals including squash from the garden, fresh baked breads and deserts ranging from maple mousse to apple turnovers. The Uplands was pleased to offer several sound baths, a yoga class and a morning movement practice, wood fires in the fireplace and a space for karaoke.

As they set their sights on the work in the coming period, Common Defense left The Uplands reinvigorated, with stronger bonds between team members, a deeper shared understanding of their work, and some more memories to continue to build on together.
