The Uplands was thrilled to conclude our 2025 season with a two-part retreat organized by the Samuel S. Fels Fund: a private independent foundation that provides funding to organizations dedicated to improving conditions and opportunities for impoverished or marginalized communities in and around Philadelphia. 

Fels Fund grantee organizations whose representatives participated in the retreat engage issues affecting some of Philadelphia’s poorest communities. They work to end mass incarceration, advocate for domestic workers, document grassroots stories, reform Philadelphia’s public schools and promote health and wellness for immigrant populations, among other issues. The Fels Fund has, over time, invested in leadership development for the staff of their partner organizations and wellness opportunities to support changemakers to sustain their work. 

The retreat agenda was designed with maximum flexibility, with a range of optional activities including an art project, meditation session and group journaling. Participants also enjoyed a range of activities and offerings provided by The Uplands, including a welcome sound bath, several guided walks in nature and a cooking demonstration by Uplands chefs. They made ample use of the spa facilities – notably the sauna and hot tub – and spent time in the art room lingering over their creative projects. The group was nourished throughout their stay with warming meals including waffles, banana bread, seared sesame tuna, kofta malais, a charcuterie board, a variety of hearty soups, and an array of homemade baked treats.

It was an honor to host such an exceptional group of committed changemakers and The Uplands looks forward to partnering with the Samuel Fels Fund to promote wellness for grassroots organizers in the coming year.
