The Action Lab is a strategy center for social movements advancing change that provides “rigorous and joyful spaces for organizers, leaders and artists to learn, to create and to strengthen our capacity to win.” They work to build a culture among changemakers, and changemaking strategies, that are “grounded in connection, reflection, learning, and a new culture of liberation.”
From November 5-9, The Uplands hosted The Art of Purpose: a year-long fellowship and coaching program within The Action Lab. The Art of Purpose facilitates interdisciplinary, participatory learning about the political, relational and artistic aspects of social change strategies. A cohort of 16 diverse social impact leaders spent a week at The Uplands to focus on their “why,” or purpose. Their retreat allowed participants to explore some of the nuances inherent in the work of organizing for social change, take part in somatic healing and generate art and culture that is supportive to this work.
Over five days, the group followed an agenda designed to ensure spaciousness for participants while advancing their work. The retreat included a welcome sound bath, a guided hike and a “paint & sip” evening in the art studio. The organizers designed the retreat to include extended lunch breaks to allow participants to integrate the workshop sessions, connect with one another, enjoy the spa and explore the surrounding nature. Over the week the group enjoyed nourishing meals featuring a late-season harvest including a vegetable curry, roasted squash, fried rice with teriyaki chicken, roasted sesame zucchini, pumpkin bisque, lasagna and pesto pasta, broccoli salad and a range of baked goods and fresh desserts.

It was a privilege to host this visionary group of changemakers and to learn from the creative methodology employed by their facilitators. We look forward to watching the Action Lab and the Art of Purpose fellows continue to learn and grow as they advance positive change across sectors.
