Retreat Spotlight: Weill Cornell Emergency Medicine – 2024

The Uplands was delighted to welcome back the emergency medicine residency program from the Weill Cornell Graduate School of Medical Sciences for the fourth time, at the start of May 2024.

After arriving and settling in, the group of twenty residents and four attending physicians gathered in the serene natural setting of Cheriklo for grounding and reflecting on the past year. Then, with mountains of freshly leafed-out spring trees as their backdrop, they enjoyed a meal of locally sourced roasted garlic and ramp soup, mushroom stroganoff, fiddleheads, and carrot cake. The group gathered for a sunset toast and then returned to Cheriklo for a lively bonfire under the stars.

The next morning, two residents led an optional yoga class. Following a hearty breakfast, most of the group opted for a rugged hike on our Brook Trail, making it a brisk workout through the spring forest, before returning for a soothing sound bath.

Throughout their stay, the  group enjoyed intermittent use of the pool and sauna during their free moments. A team-building art activity brought them together, prompting laughter and connection. They concluded with an outdoor heartfelt integration session, taking deep breaths, reading a poem, and expressing their gratitude for one another. Their visit ended with a final lunch featuring a blueberry cheesecake dessert that received rave reviews before they returned to the city and their teaching hospitals.
